MIA Tickets – From Grammys to Hospital, She Goes

Her first born’s due date isn’t stopping the Kala rapper’s first appearance at this year’s Grammy Awards, as a “tentative” date has been set for the nine month-plus pregnant star who’s estimated due date is February 8th — the same as the ceremony. Though the expectations may be high to hear the underground cult favorite turned mainstream hit “Paper Planes,” only her hormones know whether it’ll be possible. “They say you’re often late the first time, so I’m planning to go,” she told USA Today. “We’ll see. People are trying to get me to relax and focus on the baby. It’s like being in parallel universes.”

M.I.A.’s addition was made just a few days after Maya Arulpragasam (her given name) revealed that her due date was also on the day she would learn whether her contribution to Slumdog Millionaire for her single “O…Saya,” for Record of the Year for Paper Plans and Best Rap Song for “Swagga Like Us” will have her leaving the stage not only with a new package in the form of a gold Gramophone, but also something a little more fragile. She joins Neil Diamond, B.B. King, John Mayer, Smokey Robinson, Keith Urban and Stevie Wonder as the latest to join the 51st annual Grammy Awards February 8th at the Staples Center. If you happen to miss M.I.A.’s performance this Sunday, clearly her determined spirit isn’t going to settle down any time soon, making a trek back on stage a likely feature for the near future, so hit up http://www.stubhub.com/mia-tickets now to grab onto MIA tickets.

Engaged to Benjamin Brewer, formerly of The Exit, Arulpragasam’s lyrics are plagued with the whirlwind childhood she thrived in, spending the first part of her life traveling from London to Sri Lanka to Madras, India only to return to Sri Lanka again. During her return to her parent’s home country, a civil war broke out and forced Arulpragasam and her family, whom many she had already lost, to flee the country as her active separatist father who was part of the Tamil rebellion to be sought. Safely returning to London as refugees, Arulpragasam started focusing on the arts while in school, eventually publishing a monogram book of her work. Continuously influenced by her parents’ upbringing, her images reflected the life behind the Tamil rebellion as she learned how to earn a living on the politically tinged art (specifically with Elastica).

Working under the name M.I.A., the artist started to connect with sequencers and producers who caught a copy of her “Galang” single and helped release 500 copies with Showbiz. Its energetic style infused with unrecognizable beats, M.I.A. learned what it was like to be on a positive fast track as she signed with XL. Continuing her constant controversy engagements, after her debut Arular was released she mixed a Piracy Funds Terrorism tape with DJ Diplo, followed by Kala in 2007. The sophomore set named after her mother had M.I.A. working in the US (with Timbaland) along with Switch, Blaqstarr and Diplo, as “Paper Planes” became an instant underground hit. Besides being used in the latest Oscar buzzed indie flick Slumdog Millionaire, “Paper Planes” got its first soundtrack and mainstream appearance via Pineapple Express with James Franco, setting it up for the Top Ten.
